Now I Know My Wine-Phabet: V is for Vinosity

Posted on

In this new series called “Now I know my Wine-phabet”, I will explore letter by letter wine and what I believe are some of the most important and/or influential aspects in the world of wine.  Since I am only choosing one topic per letter, many will be missed.  Hopefully these posts come across as being whimsical and informative.

If you were to look up the definition for vinosity you would see two.  1) Relating to, or the characteristic of wine.  2) The indulgence of wine.  When we blind taste in my sommelier group we add a third definition, vinosity is the expression of a wine’s aromas and flavors as it begins to develop and age.

When I was growing up there was an old man who lived next door, Mr Prity.  When I was about 11 years old he was quite scary.  He would always spy on us through his window making sure we were not on his property.  He was down right mean.  There he stood with a cigar in hand, eyeing our every move just waiting for our ball to go into his yard. One could say that he had a lot of tannin and acidity. Read Full

WhINE to the MUSIC: Elis Regina and Lidio Carraro

Posted on November 7, 2012

Whine to the Music is the art of pairing wine and music.  In the same way I approach ART & WINE PAIRING, I will tackle wine and music.  I’ll look at the structure of the wine and pair it to the elements of the music.  Take a sip of your wine.. do you feel anything?  Watch a music video…do you feel anything?  Whine to the Music is pairing wine and music based on emotion.  How does one begin to approach such an obscure concept?  Below you will see the basic structural elements of wine and how they pertain to music.

WhINE to the MUSIC: LCD Soundsystem and Nicolas Joly Savennieres

Posted on October 26, 2012

“Whine to the music” is the art of pairing good grooves, such as LCD Soundsystem “Dance Yourself Clean” with wine. We have been drinking wine with music since the dawn of wine. I don’t think music would have evolved without wine. Most people tend to turn up the music when they drink wine. Whine to the Music is not just sitting back, drinking wine and getting teary eyed. It is a concept like ART and Wine Pairing, where we dissect the structures of the wine and the work to its basic elements. The structural elements eventually create an emotion in us. Whine to the Music is the art of pairing wine with music based on the emotion they evoke in us.
_________
Emotion is a direct result of our environment. The sounds, the sights, the feelings and how we interact in that space creates our environment. Wine is full of emotion. It makes us tipsy, loose and lets our guard down changing our interactions with our environment. Drink enough and we lose our inhibitions. Take in the aromas, savor the flavors, and concentrate on the finish. The wine will open up and effect your emotions.
